What is Involved in Patient Treatment Plans?

At the Rehab Docs, we incorporate three phases of care into our patient treatment plans to give ideal biomechanics. We teach you how to correctly use your body so you don’t injure yourself. Once you know the three phases of care you will be ready to take on training.

Phase 1: Consciously Competent

Phase one in our patient treatment plans is learning a new skill. We naturally compensate biomechanically to make our body more metabolically efficient. Though these compensations save energy metabolically, they do not promote longevity and often result in degeneration and injury long-term.

Instead of being unconsciously incompetent, we need to first make you consciously competent by teaching you skills to promote longevity. The first phase will feel weird in the beginning because it’s not your normal—we need to give you a new normal based on your current abnormality. After you become consciously competent, we give you the tools to become unconsciously competent because these ideal biomechanics are your new normal.

Phase 2: New Normal

Phase 2: New Normal

Next in our patient treatment plans is the “new normal” from phase one transitions to phase two, where we build upon your newly-learned skills. Phase one mostly incorporates isolated movements, whereas phase two translates the isolated movements into dynamic and functional movements. By doing this, we start to create a toolbox that will help you fight compensations and build ideal motor patterns.

In phase two we have you begin a program, such as working out or sport-specific training. Keeping your foundations in mind, you will continue to build strength, speed, and endurance.

Phase 3: Biomechanical Checkup

Lastly in our patient treatment plans is a biomechanical checkup. Patients come in periodically to ensure they are staying within ideal biomechanical parameters. We need to make sure you are not breaking down and falling back to poor patterns. We know how easy it is to fall back into old patterns, so we’ve created a screening process to take people through to make sure they’re staying in those ideal parameters.

Our goal at this visit is to do everything we can to give you the best chance of success. If we find an issue during the screening process, we remind you of the tools in your toolbox that you can implement—this way you’re not relying on someone else to do it for you, and you’re able to do it on your own.
